In Expressive Drawing Class we do this exercise where we draw through touch only. You close your eyes, and I give you a fragment of sculpture from the studio. They are lumpy, tangled, odd, silky. They are not things that you usually see, and so you can’t identify them. You have to feel your way around. The weight, the size. How does it feel against the back of your hand, or your wrist? All of the body is a feeling field.
And then we draw…
And then we get to look. The colour is surprising, and I get to hear gasps of surprise and delight. And then everyone wants to close their eyes again because it’s soooo amazing what we can learn through touch!
