In the last class, we all bring our drawings in. The floor is carpeted with expressive life drawing – bold charcoal swirls, delicate personal watercolour webs. A huge document of what we have experienced and made together. I’d really like to share some of it.
I have booked the gallery at Vincent’s Art Workshop for a show for us, from 10th July – 24th July.
I’ve been making new work, using your instructions from class, and exercises that we do together. I’m trying to share what teaching and learning is for me, and what I see when I look into those dark mysterious places in the studio. The works so far are jewel like – small and colourful, and intense.
DO YOU WANT TO BE A PART OF THIS SHOW? It’s open to anyone who has been to class with me. The kaupapa is:
- Show and share what we do in class.
- Value experience and experiment.
- Celebrate learning and bravery, and what we have made together.
- Offer an opportunity to find out more about what class is like, and make it less scary to come along for the first time.
I’m acutely aware of how hard it is to face down what we’ve been told about who is creative / what good art is / who is allowed to be an artist, and come along to class and try it out. Just turning up is super brave, and I know that many people feel anxious to try it out. But determined and excited too!
I also know that conversations with me really help people feel comfortable enough to try class. That it’s not about being perfect, it’s about being you. So I’m also inviting you to be part of that conversation with people; to write down or talk about what class has been like for you. That might be me asking to use feedback you’ve already given and put it on the wall, or just being at the opening and chatting to people.
There will also be a koha afternoon drawing class on Saturday 20th July, 2 – 4pm, at Vincent’s for people who’d like to try it out.
WHAT ARE THE DATES?
Show will open on Weds 10th July, and run till 24th July.
If you are interested, I will add you to an exhibition email list, and send out dates for delivery of work and meeting to make plans!
WHAT CAN I PUT IN THE EXHIBITION?
You can put anything you have made in class with me. I’m anticipating one work per person, depending on interest…
WHAT IF I WANT TO MAKE SOMETHING NEW?
No problem! I am running Expressive Life drawing for 6 dates before the exhibition. You can come to one or more classes, and make new work.
Dates are: 29th May, 5th June, 19th June, 26th June, 3rd July.
You MUST book if you plan to come along, so I can manage numbers. I’d love it if you could let me know in the next week if there’s a date you’d like to join us. We will be doing something different every week, so if there’s something specific you want to do, email me and I’ll let you know the plans.
The cost will be $35 per session, including materials and model fees as usual J
HOW DO I SIGN UP?
Email me, and I will add you to the list of exhibitors! I’ll also be making a private FB group so we can communicate as we go.
CAN I HELP YOU DO THIS AWESOME EXHIBITION?
Yes please! This is a big undertaking, and help is very much appreciated. There will be all sorts of things to do, and it will be a great learning experience about exhibiting too! Let me know if you are offering help, and we will organise together J
I’d love to hear back from you, answer questions, and gather a group of interested people to do this thing together. I look forward to hearing from you!
